28TH MARCH 2022 OSCARS had quite a few first-time Oscar winners but none of it made the night as controversial and spoken about as the hard smack Chris Rock got by Will Smith for making a joke over his wife. This going forward may very well go down as the 94th Academy Awards major highlight in history.

The 94th Academy Award ceremony ended with CODA taking home an Oscar for best picture, Will Smith being emotional about receiving his first award for his role in King Richard, and Jessica Chastain winning best actress for her role in ‘The Eyes of Tammy Faye’.

Chris Rock - a stand-up comedian – introduced the best documentary feature, and that’s when he made a joke about Will Smith’s wife Jada Pinkett Smith, being in a sequel to ‘G.I. Jane’– seemingly a reference to her shaved head. Pinkett-Smith has been open about having alopecia, which causes hair loss. Following this, Will strode to the stage and hit Chris and then screamed “Keep my wife’s name out of your f****ng mouth” twice. Since then, Will has been receiving immense backlash on social media for hitting Chris on national television. G.I. Jane was a late 90’s movie that saw a bald female lieutenant trying to earn a place in Navy SEALS; this did not sit well with Will who momentarily did appear to laugh at the joke, although his wife’s expression made him erupt in rage and do the preposterous deed. Chris Rock reeled and was seen to have a comeback for Will’s actions but avoided any further aggression handling the awkwardness and pressure quite well, continuing the show.

Another sensational highlight of the night included Dune the Sci-Fi powerhouse which was nominated for 10 awards, and won 6 out of the nominations; this included wins for cinematography, production design, editing, original score, sound, and visual effects. The VFX was all handled by DNEG and its Indian origin head, Namit Malhotra who won for best VFX. DNEG has previously worked on blockbusters like inception, interstellar, Tenet, and a few others. Dune is based on Frank Herbert’s book by the same name, written in the late ’60s.

Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell also won the original-song Oscar for the song. It’s the third consecutive Academy Award for music in the Bond franchise.

Beyonce opened the night from a tennis court in Compton in honour of the birthplace of tennis legends Venus and Serena Williams, whose upbringing is the subject of King Richard.

This year, The Power of the Dog led the pack of nominations with an impressive 12 nominations, including a Best Picture nomination. The movie stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Kirsten Dunst in the lead. Besides The Power of the Dog, Belfast, Don’t Look Up, Drive My Car, Dune, King Richard, Licorice Pizza, Nightmare Alley, and West Side Story were the top contenders of the Oscars 2022 Best Picture Winner.

Ukraine was shown support from nominees, presenters, and crowd alike as Reba McEntire performed her nominated song ‘Somehow You Do,’ introduced by Ukraine native Mila Kunis on stage. “While film is an important avenue for us to express our humanity in times of conflict, the reality is millions of families in Ukraine need food, medical care, clean water, and emergency services,” read a message on a black screen.

The 94th Academy awards left everyone speechless and flabbergasted, after 2 years of global upheaval, LA’s broiling excitement for the grand function was justifiable in all beingan eventful evening.
